Repairs That Last
Asphalt repair is about finding why a section failed and fixing that, not just filling a hole. In Ontario, the usual causes are a weak base under truck traffic, water getting under the pavement during winter storms, tree roots, and sun-dried asphalt that has started to unravel. A cold patch thrown in a pothole is gone within months. A saw-cut patch that replaces the failed base and asphalt is a permanent part of the pavement.
Types of damage we fix
- Potholes: holes where water and traffic have broken out the asphalt and base
- Alligator cracking: interconnected cracks that mean the base below has failed
- Rutting and shoving: grooves and bulges where heavy, slow or turning vehicles push soft asphalt
- Raveling: loose stones and a rough surface from sun-aged binder
- Edge breaks: crumbling edges where asphalt meets soil or planters
- Utility cuts: trenches that have settled after plumbing or electrical work
Patching methods
For most failures, we saw-cut a clean rectangle around the damage, remove the asphalt and any soft base, compact new aggregate, and pave the area with hot-mix asphalt. HomeGuide prices saw-cut repairs at $4 to $12 per square foot and hot patches at $2 to $5. For surface-only damage, a skin patch or infrared repair, which heats and reworks the existing asphalt, can be enough. We tell you which we recommend and why.
Crack filling
Cracks let water reach the base. Even in a dry climate, the few storms Ontario gets each winter can soften the ground under an open crack. Filling cracks with hot rubberized filler keeps water out and slows the spread. Hairline cracks are handled by sealcoat; wider cracks are cleaned and filled; and areas of alligator cracking need patching, because filling them only delays the failure.
Heat-related damage
Ruts and shoving are more common here than in cooler places, because hot asphalt is softer. Repairing ruts means removing the deformed asphalt and replacing it, often with a thicker section where trucks stop or turn. Dumpster pads and loading zones that keep failing may need concrete instead of asphalt.
Small jobs welcome
Many contractors have minimum charges because of the equipment needed; HomeGuide lists minimum service fees of $100 to $250 for asphalt repair. We can often group several repairs into one visit to make a small job worthwhile.

Asphalt Repair Questions
Why do potholes keep coming back in the same spot?
Usually because only the hole was filled and the base under it was left wet or broken. A saw-cut repair that removes and replaces the failed base stops the cycle.
Is it worth repairing an old driveway?
If the damage is in a few areas, yes. If more than about a third of the surface is cracked or patched, replacement is often the better value. We give you both numbers when it is close.
Can you fix a sunken spot from a plumbing trench?
Yes. The settled asphalt is cut out, the trench backfill is compacted or replaced, and the area is repaved to match the surrounding grade.
Do tree roots damage asphalt?
They can lift and crack it. We cut out the lifted section and repair it; removing or barriering roots is a decision for you and, if needed, an arborist.
